Scientists searching for fossils in the Andes have discovered the 18 million year old remains of an ancient relative of the armadillo. In life, Parapropalaehoplophorus septentrionalis was about 2.5 feet long and weighed in at 200 pounds. As impressive as that is, it’s nothing compared to a later relative. The Glyptodon, another armadillo relative, which went extinct a mere 10,000 years ago, was 10 feet long, and weighed 2 tonnes.
