Beer: Domestic, Imported, and Home Brewed

I just finished Beer: Domestic, Imported, and Home Brewed by Eve Adamson. As you can probably tell by the title, the main topic of the book is beer. It has two chapters about beer, its history, its types and styles, and how to enjoy it. The lion’s share of the book, however is a region-by-region look at the beers of the world. Each of these chapters has a historical overview of beer production in each of those regions, along with who the brewers are, and a breakdown of individual products to try based on style within that locality. The final chapter is a brief overview of how to brew your own beer.

It’s a nice overview for someone who enjoys beer tasting and beer drinking.

Millstream Colony Oatmeal Stout Lager

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

millstreamstoutlabel.jpg

Hm. A stout-style beer made with lager yeast instead of ale yeast? Wouldn’t that technically make it a schwartzbier instead of a stout?

Who cares?

Millstream’s Colony Oatmeal Stout Lager is a great beer. I normally prefer Imperial Stouts to Oatmeal or Dry Stouts, but this is a beer that can hold its head up proudly with the best Imperials. It was extremely well-balanced, with not-so-subtle hints of chocolate and roasted coffee.

Or, to put it more simply: yummy!

And finally, the European Space Agency wants to put its own rover on Mars.

Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

sierranevadacelebration-glass.jpg

Sierra Nevada’s Celebration Ale pours a dark amber color with a very generous head that subsides quite slowly. The ale has a somewhat sweet-smelling aroma. This aroma promises hops, and the flavor delivers them in spades. This beer has a big, bold hoppy taste that stands out among an otherwise well-balanced beer. It doesn’t particularly please my palate, but I have a hops-loving acquaintance to whom I’d recommend this ale.

Servant of God Antonietta Meo

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

desnenolina.jpgIn an article entitled Italian six-year-old takes next step towards sainthood, Catholic News Agency reports that Pope Benedict XVI has confirmed the heroic virtues of Anonietta Meo (nicknamed “Nennolinia”). This step allows the faithful to refer to her as “Servant of God,” the step before Beatification in the Canonization process. Read the article. It’s inspiring to see someone so young so in love with Christ.

New Jersey bans capital punishment

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

New Jersey became the first U.S. state in 4 decades to ban capital punishment. It might make me a lousy conservative, but I have to say that I approve of this measure.
