Belhaven’s Wee Heavy is the first Scottish Wee Heavy (Strong Ale) that I’ve had, and so, represents the style to me. It’s rich, malty, dark, and somewhat sweet. The head is decent, with nice lace. It must be rather high-calorie, since I’ve gotten rather full tonight by drinking it. Wow.
It’s good. I mean that. It’s really good. However, I think I still prefer a lighter-tasting type of Scottish ale, such as this brewery’s St. Andrew’s Ale.
Last night, a friend of mine and I went out to dinner and then to have a couple of beers.
The first beer I had last night was Anchor Brewing Co.’s Anchor Steam Beer. I quite liked it. My friend thought it had a distinctive aftertaste. My palate couldn’t detect it. What I detected was a mouthfeel that was rather vigorous - especially compared to the silky mouthfeel of the Newcastle Brown Ale she was having. There was some hoppiness, but it was fine in my book.
Next, I tried Sam Adams Cherry Wheat. What can I say about this beer? The aroma was that of Maraschino Cherries. And the taste was dominated by cherries too. The beer taste was negligible at the beginning, but as you drank it, you begin to think that it might be possible to determine the qualities of the malts and hops underneath the strong cherry taste. If so, it would definitely take me more than one bottle to do so, however.
I also had a Boulevard Unfiltered Wheat, which I discussed here previously.
Finally, I tried Schlafly’s Pale Ale. Unlike the typical American Pale Ale (or even many English Pale Ales) this beer wasn’t very bitter. In fact it was far more like an English Bitter than a Pale Ale. It was quite good - nice, rich aroma; clean tasting; rich; and basically yummy.
All in all, it was a good evening. Good food (I had a roast pork horseshoe with white cheese sauce), good company, and good beer.
