Democrats hate you and want you to pay MORE for gas
Wednesday, June 11th, 2008If you look at the shenannigans that the Democrats have pulled on Capitol Hill yesterday and today, that is the inevitable conclusion you will reach.
Yesterday, the Democrats attempted to raise our gas prices by levying a “windfall tax” on profits that oil companies make. Everyone with 2 brain cells already knows this, but let me explain something to our less-gifted friends across the aisle. Corporations don’t pay taxes. They pass those expenses on to you, the consumer. Levying a tax on what corporations make isn’t going to stop them from trying to make money. They are legally obligated to make money for their shareholders - who happen to be working-class Americans.*
So, if Congress levies a tax on a corporation, you will be paying that tax at the pump. Thankfully, they were stopped.
Today, in a fit of partisan pique, the Democrats decided to take their ball and go home. The Republicans introduced a bill to allow drilling new oil wells in the U.S. The Democrats, in a party-line vote, killed it in committee.
By the way, last week, a gallon of gas averaged $4.099. On January 2, 2007, the day before the Democrats took control of Congress, it cost $2.399. Just sayin’.
*Yes, working-class Americans. Not the ridiculously wealthy. The majority stock in Exxon-Mobil, for instance is held by Mutual Fund companies, which in turn are held by 401k plans - such as yours.
