Clearing out the spam

I really should check the comments more often for spam. I just cleared out six advertisements – 5 for disreputable drug sales and 1 promising kiddie porn. How revolting! I guess the problem is that spambots aren’t actually leaving comments on my site – so I’m not getting email notifications that I have a new comment. Instead, the spammers are posting these advertisements on their own blogs and including a link to one of my posts in them. This automatically sends a trackback to my blog which gets posted automatically in the comment section. Trackbacks are highly useful for increasing web traffic to a site (such as mine) so I don’t want to disable them, but as far as I know, there’s no way to prevent spammers from misusing the technology this way. Grr!
