Needless to say, that means we here in Springfield will be getting a new bishop when one is ordained or installed.

I thought he did a rather decent job as bishop. My impression of him personally was that he was somewhat introverted and was more comfortable with formal than informal settings. That latter bit is probably not a bad thing in an archbishop.
His coat of arms will be changing. The bolero will get another row of tassles, and the half of the shield which is the diocese’s coat of arms will be changing from that of Springfield to that of Omaha.
I’m rather curious as to who the Pope might name as his successor to the See of Springfield-in-Illinois. (The Diocese of Springfield is located in Massachusetts, and the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau is located in Missouri.) I strongly doubt that it will either be an ordinary of a larger diocese – or even the ordinary of a small diocese, seeing as we’re a small diocese ourselves. Rather, it will probably either be an assistant bishop getting his own See (as Bishop Ryan was) or a priest will be directly ordained our bishop (as Bishop Lucas was). If you’d like to figure out which priests are on the short list, I suggest you look first at which priests currently serve as seminary rectors.
