D.C. continues to trample on civil liberties

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Reason Magazine, in an column called Excuse Me While I Get My Gun, reviews Washington D.C.’s continued attempt to thwart Americans’ right to self-defense. I see that Congress is abdicating its Constitutional power to govern the nation’s capitol.

I suppose that’s because Congress if full of fascists who want to unconstitutionally strip Americans of all their rights.

I just watched the new JibJab video, and despite all the people saying they liked it, I just found it kind of blah.

Welcome to the police state

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Brendan Loy has a good blog post about the Tennessee man arrested for “unlawful photography” after photographing cop on public highway.

I hope Mr. Conover has a really good lawyer. The unnamed sheriff’s deputy, and the Johnson County sheriff’s office, need to be held accountable for their crimes.

Ezra Levant calls on Congress to put Canada on the watch list of human rights abusers

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Levant to Congress: put Canada on the watch list of human rights abusers.

An excerpt:

In other words, Canadian human rights commissions — secular government organizations — are prosecuting religious fatwas. It’s a soft jihad against any criticism of radical Islam. It’s called “lawfare”, and it’s a greater danger to our western values of freedom, religious pluralism and the separation of church and state than the hard jihad of terrorism is. Even if targets like Maclean’s eventually “win”, they lose; the process is the punishment – and the chill affects everyone else.

Canadian human rights commissions, however, are not respectful of the sensitivities of all religions. Less politically correct faiths are regularly prosecuted by them. This May, an Alberta pastor named Stephen Boissoin was given a lifetime gag order, never to say anything critical of homosexuality – not in a church sermon, not even in private e-mails. As well, in what can only be called a Maoist verdict, he has been ordered to renounce his religious beliefs, and to publish a self-denunciation in the local newspaper.

This is Canada we’re talking about. Not Iran, not China, not Cuba.

It’s a good column. Read the whole thing.

Traffic and storm

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Tonight as I was driving home through a downpour, I was approaching an intersection that was a 4-way stop. Right before I got there, some @&%$# driver blew through the intersection going at about 40-45 MPH. I’m lucky I didn’t get there a few seconds earlier. It might have been nasty.

Then, there was the uprooted street light. This massive telephone pole-like object was lying across both southbound lanes of traffic on 9th Street. A fire engine and a police car were diverting traffic.

Deborah Gyapong: CHRC dismisses complaint against Catholic Insight.

Well, that’s good, I suppose. But why doesn’t the Canadian Parliament do away with the CHRC altogether?

Heller

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

Heller was affirmed by the Supreme Court this morning.

Update: This means that the Supreme Court ruled that the D.C. gun ban law is unconstitutional. It appears to have been 5-4 along ideological lines. Justice Scalia wrote the opinion. Justice Breyer dissented, joined by Justices Stevens, Souter and Ginsburg.

H/T: Scotusblog

Another Update: Apparently, there are two written dissenting opinions, but only one majority opinion.

Update 9:25 a.m.: Here’s a link to Justice Scalia’s opinion upholding Heller. I’m sure it will take me a while to read it.

That last bit is a relief.

Quick house update

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

houselogo.jpgIt’s been a while since I’ve last reported on the progress in my house-building project. I now have a driveway and a front porch. The back porch is ready to be poured, but the forms for the walkway up to my front door haven’t yet been put in place. The pest control guy came by earlier this evening and sprayed down the back porch location, and probed his spray wand deep into the earth in front of the front porch.

Trim work and closet shelves are going up. The hardwood flooring has been laid, but still needs to be sanded and have a finish coat applied. The oak staircase is nearly done being varnished, and will be installed soon. The floor tiles have been laid in the kitchen, laundry room, bathrooms, and near the front entrance. Bricks have begun to be laid. And my kitchen cabinets (sans countertop) are all installed.

All in all, we’re nearing the end.
